on display, room 001 About the workSince the early Middle Ages, the image of Mary enthroned with the baby Jesus on her lap has been called the “Seat of Wisdom”. This is an allusion to the biblical throne of Solomon, who ruled over the kingdom of Israel in the tenth century BC and built the first Jewish temple in Jerusalem. Mary and Jesus look directly towards the viewer and yet they seem simultaneously distant in a majestic space. The infant Jesus appears in the form of an adult as a ruler and teacher. This representation aims to symbolise the wisdom represented in the figure of Christ.
