About the workMax Slevogt, an artist from southern Germany, painted several portraits of a Somali man known as "Hassanó". Recent research suggests that this might have been the scholar Mohammed Nur. He came to Germany in 1910 to teach participants in a Berliner human zoo. People from various "exotic" cultures were put on display for the many visitors who attended. The enthusiasm for the foreign went hand in hand with a feeling of superiority over the "savages". While the model in this portrait appears self-confident, other depictions by Slevogt are clearly characterised by this attitude.
