About the workThese figures spiral upwards dramatically. This depiction is based on an ancient tale related to the founding of Rome, the so-called Rape of the Sabine Women, in which the Romans kidnapped the women of a neighbouring town. The printmaker and publisher Andrea Andreani has reproduced a work by the sculptor Giambologna in Florence here. His unusual sculpture can be viewed from all sides due to its complex structure. Andreani’s chiaroscuro woodcut made it famous far beyond the borders of Italy.
