About the workFriedrich Boser painted his artist friends over a period of around ten years. Most of them lived in Düsseldorf, where Boser studied between 1836 and 1843. These images are presented alongside several self-portraits of colleagues in the same format, resembling an ancestral gallery. Little is known about the background to the gallery’s creation; Boser likely made it for himself. Miniature portraits were popular until the nineteenth century, as they allowed people to carry pictures of their loved ones. Gradually, however, the newly invented medium of photography replaced these painted likenesses.
