About the workIn this painting, Julius Bretz staggered different sections of a landscape behind each other – in the middle ground is the avenue leading to Rolandsburg, a restaurant destination in Grafenberg, Düsseldorf. The motif almost seems abstract due to the limited range of colours and the distinctive areas of light and shadow. In 1909, Bretz co-founded the Sonderbund artists’ association in Düsseldorf. He presented "Schlossallee" under the title "Abend" (Evening) at the Sonderbund exhibition in Cologne in 1912, which was internationally influential in promoting the avant-gardes of the early twentieth-century.
