About the workIn the 1860s, Carl Heinrich Hoff married Marie Sohn, the daughter of the then famous Düsseldorf painter Carl Ferdinand Sohn. This painting is believed to be an engagement portrait. The depiction of their intimate familiarity, in which she is presented elegantly in profile, suggests a deep connection. Lovers as well as park and castle scenes are recurring motifs in Hoff’s oeuvre.
