About the workThe woodcut print by the Japanese artist Utagawa Kunisada depicts a famous revenge campaign. In 1630, Kawai Matagorō killed a popular member of the Ikeda clan. On his deathbed, the lord of the clan called upon the brother of the murdered man,Watanabe Kazuma, to carry out revenge. When Kazuma learned where the guilty man was hiding, he planned an ambush. Kunisada shows the climax of the attack: Matagorō falls from his horse and is beheaded by Kazuma. In the culture of the time, blood revenge was seen as a legitimate means to restore justice and honor.
