About the workCovered by overlapping, flaking layers, this painting by Bernard Aubertin is reminiscent of a weathered surface. Using a flat tool, the French artist moulded the paint into this fossilised-looking structure. Aubertin, known as "le rouge" – the red one – devoted himself to the effect and materiality of this powerful colour from 1958 onwards. He used it as an independent motif and artistic means. In 1961, Aubertin joined the ZERO movement, founded in Düsseldorf, whose experimental approach to art he shared.
