About the workThis depiction of a South Tyrolean in festive costume is attributed to the Viennese painter Friedrich von Amerling. In the 19th century, the Alpine region attracted travellers, who were fascinated by the mountains as well as by the unfamiliar, traditional costumes and customs. Tyrol also played a role in the rise of nationalism, as fighters resisted occupation after the Napoleonic Wars and went down in history as national heroes. Under the Nazi regime, the painting became part of the collection planned for Adolf Hitler’s "Führer Museum". The motif may have contributed to this: The then already Italian but German-speaking South Tyroleans were invited to resettle in Germany in 1939. As the previous owners of the painting are unknown, there is a need for further research.
