About the workJulius Schnorr von Carolsfeld painted this picture upon his return to Germany after spending a few years in Italy. Alongside the Düsseldorf Academy directors Peter Cornelius and Wilhelm Schadow, he was a main representative of the so-called Nazarenes. In keeping with their aim of painting in an emphatically religious style inspired by the Italian Renaissance, the focus in this depiction is on the pious expression of the group of figures. As in his other works, Schnorr von Carolsfeld embedded them in a detailed landscape.
