About the workOn one of his numerous study trips to Italy, Theodor Groll painted the Piazza delle Erbe in Verona. From a slightly elevated position, he captured the hustle and bustle of the market square. On the left, the fountain "Fontana di Madonna" towers above the white umbrellas and in the background the white marble column with the Lion of St. Mark, the heraldic animal of the once allied Republic of Venice, rises up in front of Palazzo Maffei. Groll was known for his landscape and architectural paintings. He was particularly interested in architecture: before his painting career in Düsseldorf, he was educated as an architect.
