About the workHubert Salentin was 32 years old when he was painted by his fellow Düsseldorf Art Academy student Ernst Bosch, who was twelve years his junior. It is possible that the portrait was realised as part of their studies. In terms of colour, the work adheres to the earthy tones of seventeenth-century Dutch painting, which was revered at the time. Both Salentin and Bosch specialised in narrative scenes from folk life.
