About the workThis piece from the Grey Paintings series entered the collection of the Kunstpalast in 2011 as part of the extensive donation of some 3000 works by the Düsseldorf tax consultant and collector Willi Kemp (1927–2020). Kemp had started to collect contemporary art, particularly by artists who lived in the Rhineland or were represented by galleries in the region, in the 1960s. He received this Grey Painting as a gift from Gerhard Richter after advising him on a customs issue.
