on display, room GAUL. Werke aus der Sammlung Kemp About the workLike a radiant symbol, the yellow shape rises from the centre of this composition, in keeping with its title – the ancient Greek name Nicomedes, which essentially means “the victorious”. Instead of a rectangular format, the painting is composed of three interconnected canvases. Diagonal lines on the lower lateral sections reinforce the sense of the central form rising upwards. This piece is a late example of a series that begun by Winfred Gaul around 1980, drawing on cultural history. It demonstrates how consistently the artist approached his series of works.
