About the workBoth a palace and a centre of power: this work captures the monumental impression of the Bronze Age city of Mycenae in modern-day Greece. It belongs to a group of paintings from the 1980s whose titles reveal cultural and historical references. The works are characterised by bold swathes of colour that widen towards the bottom, dividing the picture plane into three column-like zones. Winfred Gaul’s engagement with the past is also evident in his technique. Drawing on classical oil painting, he layered the colours – in some cases using glazes – to enhance their effect.
