About the workThe Hanover-based artist Carl Buchheister taught himself to paint. He chose his techniques and materials in a highly imaginative way and influenced many other artists in the process. In this transitional work, the geometry of Buchheister’s abstract style developed between 1923 and 1934 encounters organic elements that are typical of his practice after 1945. Black and white are juxtaposed and connected by thread-like lines and grey fields. The theme of this picture is the harmonious tensions that are the essence of all life.
