About the workThis painting belongs to the series of Wall Paintings by Barcelona artist Antoni Tàpies. The title refers to the function of the wall as a structural element. It blocks visibility and access while also providing a surface on which traces and marks can be perpetuated. In this work, layers and fractures allude to numerous unfinished histories. Carefully matched earth and mineral substances enhance this effect. Echoing the ground’s capacity to hold and retain the past, earth and sand point to prior events and places. By reinterpreting the materials, Tàpies broke with the traditional conception of art.
