About the workGerhard Hoehme used a brush and a palette knife to form thick layers of paint on the canvas. The resulting pattern is characterised by earthy green tones and appears lush and saturated – like waterlogged moss growing out of the picture plane. At the time this work was created, Hoehme was living in Kaiserswerth, a district of Düsseldorf close to nature. His interest in colour as a carrier of time and space is evident here in the symbolism of a plant that stores water, survives extreme conditions and sprouts again and again.
