Werke aus der Sammlung Kemp About the workA visit to Claude Monet’s garden in Giverny in 1980, where the French artist had created his famous water lily paintings, left a lasting impression on Winfred Gaul. He realised that Monet’s art is linked less to a particular place than to a specific understanding of colour. In this four-part painting, the interplay of the colours, together with the title, evoke an image of a desert landscape. The brushwork on the canvases, each rendered differently, is reminiscent of Monet’s dynamic painting style. Here, the focus is not on the landscape but on its painterly effect.
