About the workThe bright colours glow vividly against the black background. Despite being applied in a thin and irregular manner, they radiate a powerful brilliance due to their stark contrast. Rather than using a straightedge or tape, Winfred Gaul made the marks by applying the paint with his fingers, working from top to bottom. He used this technique to create the drawing-like marks in the painting. Amid the tension between control and chance, an order remains discernible, linking this work to the other pieces in the Markings series.
