Werke aus der Sammlung Kemp About the workIn his Homage series, Winfred Gaul drew inspiration from the pioneers of colour field painting, such as the American artist Mark Rothko, positioning his own works within that tradition. In the 1950s, Rothko was one of the first artists to explore colour and its emotional impact. Gaul translated Rothko’s softly defined, luminous areas of colour against a monochrome background into a clear, geometric formal language. Both artists were represented at the major exhibition II. documenta in 1959 and met in person in New York during Gaul’s four-month stay in the United States in 1962.
