About the workWith the “Homage” series, Winfred Gaul referred to pioneers of colour field painting such as the American Mark Rothko and positioned himself in their tradition with his own works. In the 1950s, Rothko was one of the first artists to make colour and its emotional impact the subject of his paintings. Gaul situated his blurred, luminous areas of various hues on a monochrome background into a geometrically clear formal language. Both artists were represented at the major exhibition “documenta II” in 1959 and met in person during Gaul's four-month stay in New York City in 1962.
