About the workWhat are the possibilities of painting? This question interested the Düsseldorf artist Winfred Gaul. Over the course of his career, he experimented with non-representational styles. After studying under Willi Baumeister at the art academy in Stuttgart, he turned to a spontaneous style of painting with dynamic brushstrokes. A few years later, Gaul made a pivotal change when he started to explore the abstract and aesthetic appeal of traffic signs. As part of this, he developed his own system of symbols consisting of colourful geometric forms.
