About the workThis clearly structured painting by British artist Ben Nicholson stands alongside several white reliefs with similar arrangements of circles and rectangles. It was in the 1930s that Nicholson first became deeply preoccupied with geometric forms. At that time, he had just met his future second wife, the sculptor Barbara Hepworth, whose abstract works influenced him. The couple lived in Cornwall. As a refuge for many artists, this region in south-west England became a hub for modern art during the Second World War.
