Layer Field, 1958
Mixed media on cardboard
(H x W)69 × 49 cm
About the workWhite paint applied in layers stretches towards the upper edge of the picture. Shades of green, red and brown can be glimpsed beneath the scale-like texture. Gerhard Hoehme, who began teaching at the Düsseldorf Art Academy in 1984, was part of the Art Informel movement that strove for a freer approach to form and colour. He was interested in the materiality of paint and in establishing a relationship between the viewer and their surroundings by expanding the pictorial space – as is already reflected in this early work by the layers of white paint that push their way out of the image.
