About the workThis torso belongs to the Hindu goddess Parvati, wife of the god Shiva. According to religious tradition, the couple are considered the mother and father of the universe and embody the dual aspect of giving and destroying life. Parvati, Shiva and their elephant-headed son Ganesha represent the ideal Hindu family. Medieval depictions portray her with bare breasts and often with a black body. This figure would have originally been painted and was probably surrounded by other deities in one of the many temples at Angkor Wat in present-day Cambodia.
