About the workThis statue depicts Buddha as a monk – as a historical religious founder who came from a noble family and renounced all worldly temptations. This Buddhist figure from the Sukhothai province in northern Thailand was probably originally located in a small place of worship. The oval, stylised face with almond-shaped eyes, the curly hair and the now missing flame of enlightenment that originally adorned his head are characteristic of the Sukhothai style. The raised hands symbolise fearlessness.
