About the workThe US artist Alexander Calder is the inventor of the mobile. In 1931, he began creating these objects, which combined abstraction and movement. He infused these free-hanging, balanced works featuring variable elements with a temporal and spatial openness. Calder lived primarily in the artistic metropolis of Paris from 1926 to 1933 and was closely involved with the local art scene. His colleague, the French artist Marcel Duchamp, first used the term “mobile” to describe his sculptures.
