About the workThese workers’ figures are composed of simple geometric forms. Their profession is revealed by the sideways lettering and the factory buildings in the background. Their style corresponds to the shared visual language of the Cologne Progressives, a left-wing artists’ group co-founded by Franz Wilhelm Seiwert. At the beginning of the 1920s, its members tried to use art to shine a light on societal inequalities. From a modest background himself, Seiwert advocated for the working class throughout his career as an artist and writer.
