About the workIn the 1920s, Düsseldorf sculptor Ernst Gottschalk created a series of nude female sculptures. These include this intimate-looking group of figures, which depict a woman engaged in various acts of personal hygiene. The works convey the beauty of everyday gestures, combining precise observation of nature with a clear formal language. Around the same time, Gottschalk created two monumental female nudes for the "GeSoLei" exhibition in 1926, in which he again took up the theme of the healthy, naked body. Together with the bronzes by his friend and colleague Bernhard Sopher, these nudes flanked the west entrance of the Ehrenhof. While Sopher’s works were removed during the Nazi era due to his Jewish origins, Gottschalk’s sculptures remain in their original location at the museum entrance.
