Bonnets for a Married Woman, 1972
7 white gauze hood objects; 1 videotape; monitor; straw
About the workThese objects in the shape of bonnets are some of the earliest sculptural works by the performance and media artist Ulrike Rosenbach. She has been combining photography, video and multimedia installations since the late 1960s. The bonnets are made from white gauze stretched over a steel wire frame. Since the Middle Ages, bonnets have represented women’s social affiliation and status. While men’s hats signified authority, women’s head coverings indicated whether they were married, widowed or single.
