About the workIn his mural, created especially for the artists’ bar Creamcheese, Gerhard Richter embraced the pop-cultural phenomenon of the pin-up: erotic-looking pictures – mostly of women – intended to be pinned to the wall. Richter painted one of these photographs from a magazine, enlarged to the entire length of the room, then blurred his image. This gives the impression that there is a veil between the subject and the viewer, which is countered by the woman’s direct gaze. While she is the focus of curious eyes, she also observes the bar guests attentively herself.
