on display, room 021 About the workTurning night into day – Richard Gessner has captured the glamour of the big city. As if on a stage, he has arranged the seemingly impassive people who are lost in the anonymity of the metropolis. The painter, who was active in Düsseldorf, rented a studio in Paris from 1924. There, he prepared this major piece in countless studies before completing it later, once he returned to the Rhineland. In 1933, he was refused admission to the NSDAP because he had been a member of an organisation that was not accepted by the party. Nevertheless, he was able to continue his career successfully during the National Socialist era.
