About the workTwo unadorned zinc panels lean against the wall. Joseph Beuys has drawn a narrow line on their surface in pencil. The handwritten phrase “Fat up to this level” indicates that he has treated the metal with grease, while simultaneously alluding to the English idiom “to be fed up”. Beuys’ works often contain elements that are associated with energy in a wide variety of ways. In addition to fat, zinc is a recurring material in his oeuvre: this metal can store and transmit energy, which is why it is used as a conductor in batteries, for example.
