About the workCarl Ferdinand Sohn was a highly sought-after portrait artist in Düsseldorf. In 1843/44, he painted the daughters of his friend Gerhard von Reutern. The eldest, Elisabeth, was 22 when this picture was realised; at this point, she had already been married for two years to an influential Russian writer who had previously worked as a tutor to the tsar’s family. Elisabeth von Zhukovsky was also artistically talented and may have been taught by her father. After the death of her husband in 1852, she and her children went to the tsar’s court, where she died soon afterwards.
