on display, room 010.2 About the workOver the course of the nineteenth century, portrait painting became a lucrative source of income for artists. Carl Ferdinand Sohn was one of its most notable representatives in Düsseldorf. He painted the daughters of his friend, the Baltic German painter Gerhard von Reutern. Little is known about Charlotte, who was 17 years old at the time. She married a Baltic German lawyer and landowner seven years later. In Sohn’s picture, she is entirely in keeping with contemporary fashions: she has a severe braided hairstyle, an off-the-shoulder neckline and a shawl.
