About the workThis portrait is of Doctor Hanns Rabe, a relative of Max Beckmann who embraced homeopathy in its early stages and became one of its staunchest advocates. The work was shown in 1912 at an exhibition by the Berlin Secession – a group that was influenced by the vibrancy of French Impressionism and sought to break away from academic traditions. This is surprising, because Max Beckmann’s painting is defined by a dark-toned, realistic style, which was inspired by seventeenth-century portraiture and definitely bore conservative traits.
