About the workIn her oeuvre, the Egyptian artist Ghada Amer advocates for equal rights for women, the right for people to freely express their sexuality and for Western and Eastern art to be valued equally. To do so, she draws on traditional crafts such as embroidery and ceramics, which are still often associated with the female sex today. In this work, Amer has repeatedly embroidered a female face on the canvas with turquoise thread. Other evenly spaced threads form vibrant colour gradients and are reminiscent of flowing hair and dresses.
