About the workJankel Adler was born in Łódź, Poland and grew up in an orthodox Jewish family. In his paintings he combined elements from the medieval artistic tradition of Eastern Europe with the art of his time. This portrait of a young woman reflects his admiration for Pablo Picasso, whom he emulated both in his drawing style and in his experimental choice of materials. Here he used sand for the background of the picture and a stencil as an aid for the design of the lace collar. The ornamental hairstyle is a reference to Istanbul.
