About the workIn 1903, the Russian-German painter Alexej von Jawlensky travelled to Paris. Influenced by the vivid colours of French art from this period, he began to produce still lifes and landscapes. This picture, realised two years later in Munich, is typical of the early phase of Jawlensky’s oeuvre, as evidenced by its thick, dappled oil paint. The intense dark orange of the setting sun shows that colour has already taken on a life of its own here, an effect that would become increasingly prominent in the artist’s later works.
