About the work1922 was a pivotal year for the international breakthrough of Constructivism, an artistic response to an era dominated by technology and science. This painting is one of the first in which the Hungarian artist László Moholy-Nagy renounced all references to the natural environment and restricted himself solely to geometric forms and colours and their relationship to surface and space. The effects of seemingly overlapping transparent pictorial elements soon led Moholy-Nagy to further experiments with materials such as glass and transparent plastic.
