About the workThe longing for an unrestrained and authentic life in nature inspired many artists at the beginning of the twentieth century. Franz Marc’s unusually large painting presents two naked women in a forest landscape. While the trees and the forest floor are rendered very freely in pure colours, his naturalistic depiction of the women appears traditional. The work marks the transition to modern painting by the Blaue Reiter group, which was founded by Marc and Wassily Kandinsky six months after this picture was completed.
