About the workIn October 1912, August Macke visited the French painter Robert Delaunay in Paris with his fellow artist Franz Marc. Macke realised this work shortly thereafter. Delaunay’s use of pure, bright colours greatly inspired Macke and enabled him to refine his clear and colourful style of painting. The acquisition of the picture by the Friends of the Museum from the first exhibition of the Junges Rheinland (Young Rhineland) group, held at the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf in 1919, underscores the great contemporary appreciation for the artist, who had died at the beginning of the First World War.
