on display, room 027 About the workQuadrilateral shapes in different sizes and colours structure the surface of this image. A closer look reveals a clear order and pattern: starting from the blue square in the centre of the picture, the vertical and horizontal rows of colours become increasingly narrower towards the edges. The Swiss artist Richard Paul Lohse designed his paintings according to strict principles with almost mathematical precision, so that all forms and shades are equally represented. The result is a rhythmically symmetrical composition in which the painterly gesture disappears completely.
