About the workBlack bundles of lines stand out against the background. Hans Hartung’s composition gives the impression of spontaneity, although he prepared it carefully. He often made sketches first, which he then transferred to the canvas. Over the course of his career, Hartung’s approach became increasingly characterised by a dynamic immediacy. Born in Leipzig, Hartung studied philosophy and art history before turning to painting. In 1935 he emigrated to France. His work gained international recognition from the 1950s onwards. In 1955 he took part in the first documenta exhibition in Kassel.
