About the work
An abstract landscape of shapes and symbols stretches across the white canvas. Looking closely, Düsseldorf can be recognised along the Rhine, which snakes its way through the image like a blue ribbon. The painter Peter Brüning created his own system of signs, which he combined with the visual language of maps. The artist, who lived in Ratingen, was one of the most important trailblazers of the post-war art scene in Düsseldorf. He also made international contacts, forming a close friendship with Cy Twombly in particular.
