on display, room 022 About the workThe double portrait shows two artists bearing the facial features of the painter Gert H. Wollheim and the dancer Tatjana Barbakoff. The touching of their fingers indicates their connection. The two knew each other from the Düsseldorf artists’ association "Das Junge Rheinland" and had a relationship after Wollheim moved to Berlin in 1924. In his self-portraits, the painter slips into various roles. Sometimes he appears as an elegantly dressed gentleman, as a woman or, as here, as a fool whose facial features are marked by sadness.
