About the workThis painting depicts a miracle from the Old Testament of the Bible. As Moses was leading his people out of Egypt through the desert and they were in danger of dying of thirst, he struck a rock with his staff and God made water flow from it. In this image, the Antwerp painter Adam van Noort focused on the crowd’s differing reactions to this event. Although he was quite a successful artist, only a few of his works have survived. In his studio, he trained two major Flemish painters of the seventeenth century: Peter Paul Rubens and Jacob Jordaens.
