About the workThe Rhineland-born painter Ferdinand von Kügelgen was primarily known for his depictions of landscape. In this painting too, nature makes up the main part of the picture, emphasising the tranquillity of the scene. This idyll gives no hint of the dramatic context. According to a biblical story, an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream and told him to flee to Egypt with Mary and the baby Jesus. This enabled them to escape the persecution of King Herod, who had ordered all two-year-old boys to be killed out of fear of a rival.
