About the workThis type of book had been widespread in educated circles in Europe since the Middle Ages. They were generally small books that were used daily, such as Bibles, which the owner carried on their person. The girdle book was fastened to the belt with a knot or simply carried in the hand. This book is one of the few surviving examples. Later, the protruding leather binding was generally cut off to make the books easier to stand up. This pouch contains a handwritten set of rules for monks of the Benedictine order.
